De Europese Handbal Federatie (EHF) heeft de Zweedse aanvoerder Tobias Karlsson verboden om tijdens het EK in Polen een aanvoerdersband met regenboogkleuren te dragen. Dat maakte de NOS bekend. Karlsson is ambassadeur van de Eurogames en wilde met het dragen van de regenboogband oproepen tot meer respect voor homoseksualiteit. De EHF verbood Karlsson de band te dragen omdat de uiting naar hun mening in strijd zou zijn met de kledingvoorschriften.
Karlsson reageerde; “Het is triest dat we van de Europese handbalbond niet mogen laten zien dat wij voor openheid, medemenselijkheid en gelijke waarden staan”.
Ook de aanvoerders van IJsland en Noorwegen wilden de regenboodband tijdens hun wedstrijden dragen. Ook hen werd dit verboden.
