Schmetz komt over van concurrent KRAS/Volendam, waar z’n contract niet werd verlengd. Bij de oranjehemden uit het vissersdorp won de oud-international in 2015 de Supercup ten koste van z’n nieuwe club. Schmetz tekent voor één jaar in Zuid-Limburg.
De pas 39-jarige Mark Schmetz debuteerde als speler in 1993 in de eredivisie voor het Geleense V&L. Vijf jaar later dwong hij een mooie transfer af naar Duitsland, waar hij onder meer speelde voor Tusem Essen en TBV Lemgo. In 2011, een jaar na het stoppen van z’n actieve loopbaan, begon Schmetz als hoofdtrainer bij de Oranjemannen.
De jonge trainer was één van de zes kandidaten het stokje van Tijsterman over te nemen. Onder de vertrekkende dame pakten de Limburgs Lions dit seizoen de dubbel.
